Until recently I noticed that the potential of artificial intelligence was rarely using true AI techniques as most games used predetermined patterns instead. In the early days the only focus for game developers was how the computer opponent behaves / responds. Although games like Pong from 1972 were popular the gaming industry didn't grow substantially until the introduction of microprocessors allowing for more sophisticated computer challengers.
Although their is a constant debate surrounding if AI in gaming is the real deal. I personally believe it is, with developers using new techniques to not just create more challenging opponents but they can now monitor different behaviors and strategies performed by the player. One game that I believe stands out in this regard is Hello Neighbor (2017). This game confronts the player with the challenge of uncovering a secret within the basement of your neighbor. AI within the game modifies the neighbors behavior depending on the players previous attempts by placing traps and modifying the houses design meaning the game only gets harder the more failed attempts committed by the player. One version of AI withing gaming that I find proves how far AI has come within the gaming industry is OpenAI. Dota 2 a game which is renowned for its seemingly limitless range of strategies had one of its most highly rated Esport stars Dendi play against OpenAI's bot and lost twice. The both used next level bait tactics to lure Dendi into traps he had never seen before.
